Hawthorn Days at the Ulster American Folk Park
29th March 2019
Primary 7 and Class B enjoyed a wonderful day in Omagh, getting a feel of what life would have been like for the people of Ireland during the Great Famine of the 1840s. We have been reading and analysing Marita Conlon-McKenna’s novel, Under the Hawthorn Tree, delving into the lives of three young children affected by the famine and following them on their journey to Castletaggart to find their great-aunts. It has been a fantastic book to read, and the experience of the Folk Park made the novel almost come to life for them.
We visited single room houses and cottages, sampled pancakes and soup from the soup kitchen and we even had all our prized possessions tricked away from us by a cunning, wise-talking American when we landed in the States from the coffin ship!!
We learned much and had fun with our friends. It was a brilliant day. Enjoy the photos!
